Oil-Spill   Mythology    Death   Post-War

This artwork uses pre-colonial Khaleeji mythology to draw relations between the historical pearl-diving economy in Kuwait to the current oil-production economy.  This artwork aims to address oral “fictional” narrative histories and their co-existence with the histories of the 1991 Saddam invasion oil spill into the Arabian Gulf sea.

Valmara    Pearl     Myth    Economy

This installation draws upon the Kuwaiti mythology
of Hmarat Al-Gaylah. Through oral stories and symbolic imagery I explore the aftermaths of post-war reverberations. In this artwork I thought a lot about the landmines left in the Kuwaiti desert - that was once sea- The Gulf War, western calculations, and products of economy. An implanted grain of sand turns into a pearl.

Desert     Sea      Oil     Sadu
Where the Desert meets the Sea; the shore is an intermediary. An ebb & flow of knowledge, history, and life. The sea blankets the desert, and an eternal osmosis occurs.

The question I propose is if the desert really stops at the meeting of the sea, or if it extends beneath it. I use the shore as an analogy between ancestral threads that hold together the histories of desert and sea Through habit we tend to look at the histories of the Bahara families and the Bedouin tribes of Kuwait as two separate entities, clashing, or opposing; but in this project I highlight that the sea does not crash into the shore - but instead they overlap in an ancient dance.
The Sadu House museum piece titled “Ornamentation, Braids and Tassels” has further generated this question between the relationship of both Desert and Sea histories and practices, highlighting how they too, may overlap. I’m interested in what they house, what’s buried beneath them, and - when accompanied with violent histories - how crude oil as an element plays into Kuwait’s geosphere - causing a shift in both the pearl diving and Sadu practices.

Starling    Date      Fetus     Cycle
This Sculpture was a product of reflecting on the dates that have the right to penetrate the earth and grow a new, and what dates stay rotten on the surface. After watching videos of US troops burning palm groves in Iraq (2003), i created this artwork. The title is from a poem in مذكرات بحار book, Memoirs of a pearldiver, by Mohammed Al-Fayez.

ٍBu-Darya: Ripples Miniseries

Hair, Rope- 1920's pearl diving ship, Jewels, Seashells, Pearl

This artwork is a part of my sculptural miniseries, based on my larger "Bu Darya" artwork. This series breaks down the macro concepts of the main installation into smaller narratives. These sculpture narrows the audience's attention to the hair, skin, and fabric that I braided, sewed or cast into the pattern of the native seaweed you would find in the Arabian Gulf Sea, linking the pearl diving industry to the Arab-African slave trade, and the married mythical and fictional histories.
