1991    Ritual     Repeat     2026    In Kuwait’s history, during the months that the pearl divers were gone at sea, the mothers, wives, and sisters of these men would enact rituals to safeguard their loved ones, one of the rituals being dipping a cat into the sea - if the cat meows, it means the men are coming back safely. Later on, we move from a pearl industry to an oil-based industry, and Saddam’s army sets the oil wells in Kuwait on fire. An ocean of oily tides forms in the largest environmental disaster. Here, I overlap the parallels of history, and bring this ritual back, this time the women enact are safeguarding their husbands from captivity.



خلال الأشهر التي كان يقضيها الغواصون في البحر بحثًا عن اللؤلؤ، كانت الأمهات والزوجات والأخوات يمارسن طقوسًا شعبية لحماية أحبائهن وضمان عودتهم سالمين. ومن بين هذه الطقوس إنزال قطة إلى البحر؛ فإذا أطلقت مواءها عُدَّ ذلك بشارةً بعودة الرجال بسلام.

لاحقًا، ومع انتقال الكويت من اقتصاد اللؤلؤ إلى اقتصاد النفط، أشعل جيش صدام آبار النفط الكويتية، فتشكّلت بحارٌ من المدّ النفطي في واحدة من أكبر الكوارث البيئية في التاريخ الحديث. في هذا العمل، تتقاطع طبقات التاريخ وتتداخل أصداؤها؛ إذ أستحضر ذلك الطقس الشعبي من جديد، لكن في سياقٍ مختلف. فبدلًا من انتظار عودة الغواصين من البحر، تؤدي النساء الطقس ذاته وهنّ يتضرعن لعودة أزواجهن وأحبائهن من الأسر، ليصبح الفعل نفسه جسرًا بين زمنين مختلفين يجمعهما القلق والترقّب والخوف على الغائبين.

Valmara    Pearl     Myth    EconomyDrawing on similar motifs from my artwork "Dana in the Desert", I'm thinking about how oral mythology and the necessity to instil fear has been affected by production of oil rigging happening both in the desert and sea. Exploring the dichotomy of both water and sand (the two geographical and tribal elements of Kuwait) as opposing elements, yet the sea being a point of intersection.


مستوحى من صور وأفكار في عملي «دانة في الصحراء»، أفكر في كيف تأثرت الأساطير الشفوية، وخاصة تلك التي تعتمد على الخوف كوسيلة للتوجيه أو الحماية، مع توسّع صناعة النفط في البحر والصحراء.

يستكشف العمل العلاقة بين الماء والرمل، وهما عنصران أساسيان في جغرافيا الكويت وهويتها الثقافية، رغم أنهما يبدوان متضادّين. ومع ذلك، يظل البحر مساحة يلتقي فيها هذان العالمان، حيث تتداخل الذاكرة والحكاية مع التحولات البيئية والاقتصادية.
